More than any other questions, I am always asked by clients what they should wear to their family session. What you wear sets the tone for you pictures, so choosing your outfits can feel daunting. The most important thing to remember is that whatever you end up wearing, should reflect your own personal style. You should feel comfortable and natural!

I want to share my favorite tips for what to wear in family photos! I hope this helps! Please keep in mind that I am here to answer questions or give any added inspiration!

1. Dress comfortably

I can't stress this enough! Family photos (especially with small kids) can involve a lot of movement. Choose clothing that gives you freedom of movement and wont require a lot of maintenance throughout your session. Your clothing should reflect your personal style and should be something that you feel confident and happy wearing.

2. Pick the colors first

I recommend starting by choosing a base of 3 colors and sprinkle them throughout the different outfits everyone is wearing. The goal is to have everything mesh well together, but at the same time looking like you're not completely matching. Keep in mind that the colors you choose for each family member do not have to match, but they should look nice together. You don't want everyone looking the same. Mix neutrals with some accent colors. Neutrals create a soft and elegant style and will give you images a timeless feel.

3. Consider your location

Always keep your session location in mind when choosing your outfit. You don't want to blend in or clash with your background. Weather can be unpredictable, so I always encourage layering so you can add or drop a layer depending on the weather and temperatures.

4. Patterns

I generally recommend steering away from any loud, bright patterns since they distract from the most important part of the photos, YOU! Select small and simple patterns in soft or neutral colors.

5. Accessorize

Keep accessories simple! Hats and scarves are easily exchangeable as well as simple jewelry.
